The starting point in Jonathan Burrows' work is a book by Hans Brandenburg entitled Der moderne Tanz (The modern Dance) published in 1921, which is part of the Derra de Moroda Dance Archives. Burrows' project questions why anyone might attempt to archive dance, whose immediate and immaterial nature leaves us with only feint traces of the original experience, frozen in still images, books and films, which hide as much as they reveal. The piece deals with the essentially fragile nature of dance, and the power inherent in its inevitable disappearance. Burrows has invited dancer Claire Godsmark, videographer Hugo Glendinning and composer Matteo Fargion as his collaborators on this performance and installation.
