Philipp Gehmacher

1975 Salzburg, AT – Vienna, AT

Philipp Gehmacher creates choreographic works, lecture performances, video installations, and sculptures. Originally devoted to the black box, he currently works out both the exhibition format and the exhibition space. Increasingly, Gehmacher is combining his long-term occupation with theories of space, body language, touch and gesture, as well as the act of speaking and expression with objects and materials that he designs himself. He has worked together in various collaborative contexts since 2007 with the artist Vladimir Miller, choreographer Meg Stuart, and the artist and choreographer Ian Kaler. Gehmacher has been awarded various prizes (Jerwood Choreography Award 2002, Promotional Grant from the Federal Ministry for Education, Art, and Culture 2009) and is funded by the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna. He teaches at several universities (University of Salzburg, Inter-University Center for Dance, Berlin, DOCH, Stockholm) and is active as a mentor (danceWEB, ImPulsTanz, Werkstück, Tanzquartier Wien, HZT, Berlin). Philipp Gehmacher is currently studying at the class for sculpture and space by Hans Schabus at the University of Applied Art, Vienna.
