Resonance of Exile

Iin summer 2017, the museum launched a series of exhibitions on the impact of life in exile on creative minds. The second presentation is dedicated to art educators, visual artists, and architects who helped shape the development of the arts in their countries of exile. It also showcases artists in whose works their personal experience of exile resonates. Among them are the artist and theorist Wolfgang Paalen (1905 Vienna, AT-1959 Taxco, MX), whose ideas informed the nascent American Expressionism, and Madame d'Ora (1881 Vienna, AT-1963 Frohnleiten, AT), who, after returning from exile, took photographs in refugee camps around Salzburg.

Curator: Christiane Kuhlmann, Curator Photography and Media Art; with Barbara Herzog, Assistant Curator, and Peter Schreiner, Curatorial Assistant, Museum der Moderne Salzburg

A book to accompany the exhibition series will be published in 2019.
