On New Paths - Director’s Introduction

One of the most thrilling situations in life is to begin a new professional endeavor and move from one continent to another to do so. As the newly appointed director of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg who has left a fascinating job at one of the most important museums in the world in a no less eminent and dynamic city, I feel obliged to delve a bit deeper into this career decision. Wouldn’t I have been much more useful for the Austrian art scene in my position as a chief curator at the Museum of Modern Art? What ambitions can one have for the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, as compared with activities in an art metropolis like New York? In other words, what claims can the museum make within the national as well as international context in terms of content and status of the program and collection? With these questions we enter directly into a discussion on the meaning and power of institutions that are defined, to no small extent, by their resources.
