“Finally we meet IRL!“ Statements like this from the (post-)Corona era show how great our need for “real” life is. The chat shorthand IRL (In Real Life) stands for the promise that behind digital life lies the tangible “real”. However, this is often a reality full of hardships and contradictions. The complexity of social conditions is a central theme of photo books for which artists adapt ethnographic methods and explore specific social milieus. The exhibition presents examples of such narratives, which at the same time ask how life’s realities can be translated into the medium of the photo book.
