Idealism or Reality? Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Photographs
Lecture by Jill Lloyd, Art Historian, Paris, FR, London, GB
Jill Lloyd (Paris/London) is one the world’s leading experts on German and Austrian Expressionism. She has published widely on 20th-century art and curated many critically acclaimed exhibitions for leading international museums including the Tate, the Royal Academy London, the National Gallery Washington, the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
In her lecture on Idealism or Reality? Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Photographs, Jill Lloyd examines Kirchner‘s photographic oeuvre in relation to his paintings. On the one hand, photography appears contradictory to Expressionist artists’ preference for hand-made and subjective approaches to art-making, while on the other hand, Kirchner’s photographic work follows a parallel imaginary path to his paintings. This considered, may we speak of ‘Expressionist photography’?
