Art in Four Dimensions. Media Art Reconsidered
Mönchsberg
Curator: Jürgen Tabor
The Generali Foundation Collection at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg preserves, studies, and presents one of the most important collections of media art in Austria, with over five hundred works by international artists. Carefully selected positions trace the evolution of the genre from the avant-garde film of the 1960s to the early video art of the 1970s and on to the elaborate film, slide, and sound installations that artists began creating in the 1990s. In works that reflect on the operation of these media, frame astute criticisms of society and institutions, articulate feminist stances, or incorporate documentary materials, the collection boasts milestones of Western art history. The exhibition revisits the holdings, foregrounding aesthetic, psychological, motif-level, and methodological aspects and highlighting unexpected cross-connections and correspondences between the ideas of artists working at different points in time to open up a fresh perspective on major works of media art.
