Opening "Kokoschka’s Backgrounds"

22.10.2026 | 19:00 — 21:00
Old Town (Rupertinum)
Oskar Kokoschka, Doppelbildnis Oskar und Olda Kokoschka, 1963, Museum der Moderne Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Kokoschka’s Backgrounds.

The exhibition offers insights into Oskar Kokoschka’s compositions, focusing on a lesser-known aspect of his work: the development of his pictorial backgrounds.

Early paintings are juxtaposed with works from the late 1930s to the 1970s and complemented by drawings and prints from the museum’s extensive collection. The exhibition traces how Kokoschka’s backgrounds evolved over the course of his career: from flowing fields of colour that surround his sitters like an aura to narrative pictorial spaces in which attributes and additional elements become important carriers of meaning.

At the opening, Harald Krejci (Director) and other distinguished guests will give welcoming remarks.

The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Fondation Oskar Kokoschka, Vevey.

We look forward to welcoming you.
