Talk IV: Laurence Sturla

Laurence Sturla (b. 1992 Swindon, GB) works with the material clay, whose physical potential he explores and exhausts. His sculptures have something seemingly familiar and at the same time ghostly about them. Their forms are reminiscent of fragments of machines and industrial architecture of unknown origin and function from a bygone world. At the same time, the surfaces of the ceramics change before our eyes like growing organisms, being enclosed in a crust of salt. Memory, history and the present overlap and are turned upside down as categorizations of a linear conception of temporality.

In the final conversation for the exhibition Collecting Policy. New Works in the Museum der Moderne Salzburg (until November 6, 2022), artist Laurence Sturla and curator Marijana Schneider talk about Sturla’s artistic practice.

Laurence Sturla lives and works in Vienna.

He has studied at The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and teaches Plastic Conceptions / Ceramics at the Kunstuniversität Linz.
