This exhibition pays tribute to Richard Kriesche (Vienna, AT, 1940 — Graz, AT) as an international pioneer of media art in Austria. His oeuvre offers an artistic perspective on the revolutions that have taken place in the worlds of media, information, and digitization from the 1960s to the present. This exhibition takes the artist’s engagement with current digitization phenomena as its starting point and looks back at its roots and origins — the principles of dematerialization, electronization, and informatization. Kriesche’s newly developed, interactive installation Self-Space is here placed in relation to pivotal groups of works by the artist.

Developed in close collaboration with the artist, this exhibition offers a selection of Kriesche’s early conceptual paintings and his video and media projects created since the 1970s. It explores his preoccupation with genetics, the aesthetics of capital, and the relationship between digitization and spirituality. The exhibits are from the holdings of the Generali Foundation Collection and are complemented by loans from the artist himself and further collections.
