The Rupertinum, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg’s first home, turns forty in 2023. Celebrating the anniversary, we look back on the museum’s early years and out into its future.

The Rupertinum’s history is told by people. Individuals of different generations offer their personal recollections, remembering highlights and particular realizations and insights they associate with the venue: visitors who have been coming for a long time and others who discovered the museum only recently, former and current members of the staff, artists, friends, and others. Their contributions shed light on the venue’s history, but also on what it has meant to the people of Salzburg and the region, to the artists, to the professionals who worked here, often for many years, and they discuss the museum’s identity and how it came to be what it is as well as what its future may bring. Brimming with anecdotes illustrated by selected works of art and interesting and curious archival materials (photographs, posters, design drafts, and more), the exhibition is designed to provide a platform to many voices and different perspectives, including critical views; the people of Salzburg, in particular, are invited to share their own (hi)stories with the Rupertinum.
